Black Lab is the New Black

We get lots of catalogs in the snail mail, some of which are chock full of doggie stuff.

In particular, the Orvis Dog Book not only features many wonderful doggie items, they also tend towards sporty doggies as models (contrasted to other catalogs which seem obsessed with wee beasts like corgis).

Just look at this handsome guy. Why it almost reminds me of, well, ME!

However, this particular item also caused some consternation for yours truly. Do you see the circled letters?

"large in sage / black Lab shearling"

Which means, what, exactly? The large bed comes in sage? The model lab is named Shearling and happens to be black?

Well, it turns out, Black Lab is now an official color for all your doggie accessories (and I say "about time").

Sure enough, on the very next page is a closeup of the colors available, featuring, "Black lab."

Lest there was any doubt, black lab is where it's at (well, I knew that all along). Guess the days of the blonde are over.

Dexter done!

  2. Ooooh. I won't let Abby see this. While she has no issue with black Lab being a color, I don't think she'd be ready to accept that blonde is no longer in. (Although technically, she's 'creamsicle' and not actually blonde...). Were there any doodle doggies in this catalog or are we going to have to send them letters explaining that doodle doggies can lounge on beds, too?

  4. Gosh! At first I thought you were the model, Dexter! My mom likes the catalogs that feature the "wee beasts", primarily doxies,,,,imagine that! I never knew black lab was the new in color!

  9. Wow...what a great idea! Now you will not be able to see it when you shed on your bed.

Now they need to work on a brown and white print where the brown furs stick to the brown spots and the white furs stick to the white spots. We would buy two!

  22. Well, of course we knew you would be 'au courant" (sp). I took the "black lab shearling" to mean they had sheared a black lab and used it's coat for the bed lining, YIKES! I am glad you have a color named after you Dexter, but in all fairness shouldn't all dogs be represented? I propose, in our case, "Boston Bi-color Shearling". I dare them to get clippers next to Panda!! Ann TBL

  28. R is cheering!!! (I was worried for a moment that the cover was made of black lab fur).

What happened to the "chocolate lab" color?

  29. It's a good thing they don't make wire hair beds...not a best seller!

  30. Oh, whew. I was concerned that it could mean something else.
Don't you think they're being a little short-sited selling beds with the name "BEAR" embroidered on them, though? I mean, it sort of narrows the market, if you know what I mean. How many dogs named Bear are there out there?!?!

  31. Blonds are overrated anyway. ;)

I am hoping Orvis catches on and creates a Blueberry Spotted Shearling cover - but I guess it's a pretty good start that they have a Black Lab shearling! :)
