A Holiday Photo Worthy of Yours Truly (at last)

It's the same conversation every year, for four long years...

Momma: Oh Dexter, I think our holiday photo came out great.

Me: What do you mean? Look how sad my face is.

Momma: Doesn't Mango look handsome?

Me: He's sitting like a klutz. And his lipstick is out.

Momma: Mango's just being festive. You need to lighten up.

And that, my friends is how photos such as the one below wound up being on our holiday cards.

Don't use this picture, please, I look like a fat, miserable blob.

No more!

This year, I insisted that Momma invite Jimmy and Kylie's momma over for a real photo shoot.

I even agreed to getting a bath so that I would look extra shiny.

Right on time she arrived and set about transforming the estate into a professional photo studio, starting with a nice white back drop.

This is going to be great!

Things didn't get off to such a good start because Momma kept interfering. She actually wanted me to wear antlers!

I love my momma, no doubt about it, but she has some odd ideas about how to capture my handsomeness and I assure you that wearing antlers is not the way.

I apologize for giving her the evil eye a bit, but this was a serious situation.

Get your big foot out of my photo!

I was worried that she was turning into one of those Toddlers and Tiaras freak-a-zoid moms.

It was quite clever on my part to put her to work in the other room placing bows on our outside tree.

I think you missed a spot, just keep working on it, you're doing great.

While I settled back in with Jimmy and Kylie's mom for some serious photography.

Wow! Is she a great photographer or what? She really knows how to get a chap nice and relaxed.

The result? Do I need to be humble? Look at me! Labradorable!

That's my favorite picture from the day, but not the one I put on my holiday cards. I let Master choose and he liked a different one.

If you live in the Boston area, you could get Jimmy and Kylie's mom to take your photo too. It doesn't have to be for an occasion either, just a chance to capture yourself in something a bit better than those googly eyed snaps that our humans seem doomed to take over and over and over and...

Here's a link to her web site.

Now I'm off to sort through my card list and make sure momma gets enough for ALL my pals (she can be so cheap sometimes).

Dexter done!

P.S. Momma is still not healthy so we've not been visiting blogs at all lately. She's upright and everything and we're going on walkies (albeit not so far nor so fast as before), but she is still feeling a bit "toxic."

  4. What a great photo, Dexter!! We didn't do holiday photos this year. Hrmph. I don't know if we can take a second year of this madame president crap. We have just learned there was a parade yesterday, and NEITHER of us got to go. Other League ladies had their human kids, so we're crying FOUL. But Mama did learn (from a League lady, even) today of a cool pet photographer, so there's still hope... for next year.

(Never fear says Mama... the fur-girls are still featured on our holiday card. The ingrates have forgotten they were immortalized in a painting this year.)

  6. Dude. We SO feel your pain on the whole antler thing. Whoever came up with that idea should be left as food for some rabid kittens or something. Mom hasn't broken out the antlers/elf hat yet, and we're doing our best to hide them so Mom can't find them. Last year's painful antler photos actually made it on our *gasp* annual calendar! We think your official photo for this year looks great - and you are quite dashing! Take care of your Momma, too - the DOH isn't a spring chicken any more and you know how old people struggle with their health! Heehee! (That was meant to make your Mom smile... Our Mom is ancient, too...)

  8. Dexter Dude! That's a fantastic photo! It captures your handsome self beautifully! The photo of you and Mango made me laugh out loud, as did the one with you wearing antlers. Every once in a while, momma will pull out the antlers and try that with me, and I'm determined to eat the antlers. It usually turns into a wrestling match in which she forceably removes the antlers from my mouth, so I'm hoping she has learned. We're hoping your momma feels better really soon!!!

    your pal,
    Garth

Anyhu, I LOVE the professional pic Dexter!! So very handsome!! Really. GQ should be callin' soon for a cover!
Sorry your Moms is still under the weather. You know what always works? Big, wet, slobbery licks on her feets! Yups, it is the 'penicillin' of the doggie worlds, ya know? I'm sure it will works on peeps too! Plus, I'm sure she will appreciate the squish between the toes...

  16. LOL! I just love that Mango was such a lipstick fan:)))

I can't believe you made your Mom leave the room! Ha-ha! Youe pictures look great Dexter, now I'm jealous that we didn't have a big ornament for ours!

  17. Wow, Pea! That header photo is fantastic. With a professional portfolio, bet you could model for all kids of doggie products. You already make great demo videos for walking strings and stuff. This is gonna be a rough Christmas for you all, sans Mango, and we're happy your momma splurged for some really joyous Pea photos.

Hope your momma is feeling better. Ours is still grouching about her shoulder - and other joints. And Roo has been having major plumbing problems, like us. Maybe it's that Mayan end of days curse afflicting our plumbing and our mamas? If so, it ought to be over soon. One way or the other.

    Jingle bells :D

  20. Oh yes Dexter that was a truly superb result, in the end. But Gail and I are both worried about this 'toddlers and tiaras' business, which we don't think has reached Scotland yet. (Kiddies and kilts? Sprogs and sporrans?)
    Toodle pip!
    Bertie.
PS So glad you are in my camp on the 'Just Say No to Antlers' front.

  21. Ha! Dexter your holiday photos is terrific! Great cock-eyed smiley my furiend :D

Sorry your Momma is still feeling toxic - a whole week of sickies - not fun. Glad she's at least gotten to the upright phase :)

Mom says she's still lookin for a harness that deters pulling, is strong, and easy to adorn, and latches from the top. She's beginning to think she's gonna have to go to the drawin board and try and invent one herself. I told her that would have to at least wait until after the holidays cause when she starts doodlin on something, she tends to furget about everything else :S

Hope your Mom is all better real soon and you get to go on some more higher education long walkies that have cool pit stops like the tattoo parlor and liquor store to round out your knowledge base ;)

    Waggin at ya,
    Roo

You are a star subject - a great photoshoot success story! That pic is beautiful - I love the brightness of the colours. Your momma puts us all to shame...no christmas photos here (yet?). Tell that photographer of yours that if she ever comes to SA, then we're on her list!
Anyway, we hope that your Momma feels better soon.
Lots of love form your friends in SA

  35. Wow Dexter, having a bath made such a difference! I hope that doesn't give My Typist any ideas. She's been struggling to take a picture of me with the tree. Ha!! I say HAH!! She will not succeed. I do love the lipstick though. I bet it was the only Christmas card like that in the whole world ;) x
